Day 10, EA Battle Over Tsuma

Post by Saibankan » Mon Jan 29, 2018 3:01 pm

Some of the students and a few older samurai have decided to take advantage of today's winds, and fly kites. Some of them were even nice enough to bring materials for others to build their own kites. Those with kites are then free to battle for the honor of being crowned, "Kite Fighting Champion of Tsuma."

Step 1: Build a Kite

Building a kite takes either an Int/Artisan: Kites or an Int/Craft: Kites roll. The base TN for a serviceable kite is 10. 1 raise makes the kite pretty. 2 raises make it actually artistic. There is no mechanical effect for prettier kites, it's just for fluff. Failing this step ends your participation in the event as whatever you manage to put together is simply not airworthy.

Step 2: Now this is Kite Fighting! (Optional)

You have to prove yourself against a lot of opponents if you want to prove yourself a champion. The roll to make is either Reflexes/Perform: Kites or Reflexes/Game: Kites. Beating the first opponent is a TN 10, the next a TN 15, and so on. You keep repeating this step, increasing the difficulty until you finally fail a roll. Alternatively, you can just enjoy flying a kite with a single Perform: Kites or Games: Kites if you don't want to fight.

Rewards: Everyone who successfully completes step one gets to keep their kite. If you failed to complete step 1 or you completed it, but opt to not fight in Step 2, you receive 1 bonus xp that may only be spent on either Artisan: Kites or Craft: Kites. If you fought in step two you receive 1 bonus xp that may only be spent on either Perform: Kites or Games: Kites. Whomever beats the highest TN opponent will be crowned "Kite Flying Champion of Tsuma" and will additionally receive 2 pips of Glory and the title. If there is a tie on TNs, highest final roll wins.

"Kites? Don't mind if ah do, Crane-sama."

Hiko set about making The Flying Frog. His green construction, well mostly green . . . he'd managed to get some other garish colours on it as well and apparently hadn't noticed, was a sturdy beast.

"Oh, y'all are fighting them! That looks like mighty fine fun!"

The Flying Frog swooped and soared to three consecutive victories before falling to one of the local experts. Not bad for someone who'd only flown kites a few times in his life. By the end he was whooping and shouting in delight at all the fights.

Homura, along with her faithful companion Wateru, came to the event in high spirits. She went to the allotted materials and used her excellent, intact fingers to create a suitable masterpiece. There was one moment where her dog almost ruined the ensemble with his playful antics but she managed to keep him at bay.

How difficult can kite battles be? She stepped forward against a child not yet old enough to go into formal schooling. As she expected, her victory was easily obtained. It was such a slaughter that her opponent lost hold of his kite and it was sent hurling into the river. She smiled until the child began to cry, forcing her to send her dog to go fetch it from the river. "Gomen," she stated with a weak smile.

Her next bouts were far less eventful. She won the other kite battle against someone closer to her age and then only managed defeat against the next opponent. This game is stupid, she seethed before walking away with her masterpiece in hand.

Build a Kite! (Int 2, 0 Craft: Kite, 1VP +1k1, TN10): 3d10k3 20 (... TN was supposed to be 11.)

Now this is Kite Fighting 1! (Reflexes 3, TN11 missing finger): 3d10k3 20

Now this is Kite Fighting 2! (Reflexes 3, Perform: Kite 0, TN16 missing finger): 3d10k3 21

Now this is Kite Fighting 3! (Reflexes 3, Perform: Kite 0, TN21 missing finger): 3d10k3 14 Failed.

Zoido arrived at the Battle. Putting forth his best effort, he managed to make... a standard kite. It could fly, but it was very utilitarian. The one embellishment... a crudely drawn crab painted upon it.

He entered the fray. Battling with heart, despite his glaring disadvantage. He easily defeated his first enemy! His second also fell to his mighty Crab kite.

Then, he locked eyes with a third opponent. It was Iajutsu in the sky, as Zoido and the young girl, possibly no more than eight or nine, brought their kites to bear.

It was a well fought battle, with dodges and dives parrying each other. Until she gained the upper hand, tangling his string, and bringing down the mighty airborne crab.

Zoido smiled, offering the girl a bow for her victory.

Mei sat down to construct a kite. Nothing too fancy, just something airworthy.

Success! It flew! For... five feet.

She regarded the wreckage impassively, then bowed to it.

Sorry about that. This is why I ended up a bushi...

Well, Kanae was not here to win - she would not, either way, but like many other things, flying kites was a novelty, and she was curious. Besides, it was a good contrast to the barbarism of the test...

And indeed, at least the build of the kite was a success, yielding a simple, air-worthy kite. Which was nice, she guessed - but then, she also realized that, being a total beginner, there was no point in being competitive. Instead, she just let the kite fly for a bit, often in short stretches before it crashed again.

It was fun, she supposed....

Finished building the kite, elected not to fight.
