(D8, LE) Learning From the Best

Post by Hida Yoshihime »

Yoshihime scheduled some time and entertainment in the room of stars. When trying to teach the skills of paying attention to those around you and picking up on the currents of what they wanted or needed? Court was an excellent showcase of the skill, but rather dangerous to practice in. Geisha, on the other hand, also honed such skills and were generally happy to engage with patrons without ruining their reputations for minor missteps. There would be tea, lovely biwa music and some trivial and silly games. In particularly, Yoshihime thought that tora-tora-tora was an excellent game for developing that sense of what the other person was thinking.

She'd worn a playful kimono dyed brick red on one side and deep blue on the other with the colors shading across a gradient in the back. One hanging sleeve of each color completed the effect.

The Draw lot Play had certainly been something! And now Minami was heading to a geisha house to 'study.' It had certainly been a pleasant evening.

She bowed upon reaching the Crab.

"Thank you for inviting me here right after you just went through that entire play, Hida-san. The Crab's reputation for stamina is certainly well deserved!"

Right on cue their sake-serving geisha, Hanamako, giggled at the unintended innuendo. Yoshihime bowed her own greeting before chuckling. "The business of court involves many long nights, but it's not the only business that does, Miya-sama." She takes a seat, nodding a polite thanks to the geisha for the timely lesson.

"Compliments on stamina can easily be read as commentary on the less-talked-about business that keeps people up all night."

Minami took a seat and tilted her head curiously at the Hida's comment.

"Like....baking bread?" she asked, not quite sure what the Hida was getting at.

"You...bake bread at night?" Yoshihime asks as the geisha's lips quiver with suppressed laughter.

"Ah, but no. Night is also when lovers visit one another, leaving with the dawn. It is said to require some stamina to stay awake the whole night through like that."

Minami blushed furiously at the Crab's explanation, and looked down.

"Oh...um.....I see..." she said, suddenly nervous at the Hida's choice of venue and time.

Hanamako merely pours tea, very gracefully, her sleeve held back out of the way while revealing just a sliver of wrist.

Yoshihime shakes her head with a chuckle. "They haven't let you get out much, eh? Just as a bit of advice, almost anything long and narrow--a katana, a fencepost, a calligraphy brush--can become a stand-in for men's private bits," her folded fan is held aloft, and then tipped sharply to point just below her own waist, "making some conversations very suggestive, very quickly. Women's many charms have a far broader range of symbols. It's like walking near the stables....watch where you step, or your sandals are going to be a mess."

"I suggest reading more pillow books to pick up those references." She picks up her tea to sip. It's a roasty oolong that'll keep her alert for hours yet. "But tonight, I thought a game might be useful to help with...reading people. Getting a feel for people's moods and intentions is important in court." She gestures toward the geisha. "There's a game often played here, or any geisha house, that has some of that at its heart. Tora, tora, tora is probably the silliest lesson you'll have."

She leaves it to Hanamako to explain the rules, since she's very well practiced at it. And, while the game may be well understood, and probably fun, no deeper insights are found

(Teacher fails, Minami autofails)

Minami is...not great the singing part. What she lacks in talent, though, she makes up for with enthusiasm.

She is, actually, pretty good at the actual game part of the game, finding it easy to transfer her studies of Jan Ken Pon to the new format.

She drinks and she blushes, as the geisha and the Crab alternate teasing her for her inexperience.

An enjoyable evening to be sure, if not an educational one.
