[Day 14, EA] A taste of memories (open)

Nearly all of the trade to and from the city goes through this port on the Itochu River, and it serves as the central hub around which the Merchant District has formed. Storefronts and vendor stands are abundant in the area, where nearly anything can be bought or sold.

[Day 14, EA] A taste of memories (open)

Post by Bayushi Shin'ya »

Sitting here felt decidedly strange to Shin'ya. Not only was this place more crowded than he was comfortable with, something here felt...strange. Familiar, perhaps, although could not put his finger on it. He didn't even know why he'd come here - Kazari had mentioned this place, suggested that he should get out a bit, see some sunlight instead of only going out at night or on the bitter cold when few people were around.

Right. And now I remember why I have that habit.

And then there was the name. Another thing he did not want to contemplate too closely. He'd get over it in time, he'd gotten over futile crushes before, but that took time, and this one was still pretty fresh and raw.

He supposed he should be downtrodden and sad, and by some measures he was, but he'd also pulled off some things in recent days that he himself would have never thought he was capable of doing. Wouldn't have even tried, to be honest.

So there he was, a confused jumble of negative and positive emotion. A mildly queasy ball of restless energy, although one might not be able to tell at a glance, as quietly as a he sat. And looked around. There WAS something about this place. He couldn't figure it out, but there was. Bayushi Shin'ya was curious, and wanted to know when he didn't understand. Whether it was this place, other people...or himself.

There were many dishes here, from several places in the empire - and of course seasonal foods. Winter, Shin'ya found, was rarely a good time for gourmet food. He supposed he should have gotten something extravagant while he was here - but something drew him towards simplicity and nostalgia. Sure, it was hidden a bit, but they did have Scorpion-style food - traditional Rokugani with but a few deviations from the Crane standard.

Perhaps he craved comfort in his current state. Or simplicity, and a taste of home. And while many others would leave soon, he would be here for months yet. That, too, had been one of the prices of placing him here. Shin'ya did not mind. He did not miss his Clan much, most of the time, and would be fine just doing exactly what he'd always been here to do in the first place, at least officially - learn how to make Naginata, and exchange knowledge. It'd been difficult enough using old family connections from his mother's side to even get him here, but to Shin'ya it had been a boon - even if it turned out that, a few weeks in, he was teaching more than he was learning. But he did not mind - the Nogura were good people.

He briefly wondered what would happen with the detachment he'd been placed to support, and who had shown up at his doorstep in the night to get him to patch up some bleeding Yakuza. Shin'ya didn't really want to know the story behind that - but he'd liked those people. Even the dedicated Scorpions among them. Carry the fortunes, Bayushi Kazari he thought.

When his food finally came and he tasted it he looked surprised. Frowned. Took one more bite, and concentrated. And there it was. Memories that seemed light-years away, of one large city-sized stage production - and another Samurai he'd met briefly during that time. He'd thought they could be friends, but events had transpired to make it....not so.

Wonder how that guy is doing these days.
