EVENT: (D12, EA) Shadows Under Naishou

Post by Saibankan »

It seemed like a normal day in the Imperial Winter Court, political bickering, juicy gossip, and the usual mix of demonstrations of skill to keep the people with the sharp steel at their hips from getting too bored. However, some of the more vigilant (some would say paranoid) notice something....off about today.

Step 1: Me and my.....shadow?: Participants must make Per/Investigation roll at TN 25. Seppun Jinpachi's yoriki get a free raise on this roll. Those that fail notice nothing amiss about today, even when it's pointed out to them. Their participation in this event ends. Those who succeed that people's shadows are not mimicking their movements. This is deeply disturbing, and those who see the shadows moving must make a Fear 2 check. Those who fail will have -2k0 to all their rolls until the day is over.

Step 2: A Clever Plan....does anyone have one?: Seppun Jinpachi has been gathering up people who have noticed the strangeness of the day while the Hidden Guard sequest the High Court and the Empress. To proceed to the next step, 3 characters must make an Int/Lore: Lying Darkness roll at TN 20. Failure does not prevent a player from participating further in the event, but no one can proceed to Step 3 until 3 such checks succeed.

Step 3: Do Not Call Up That Which You Cannot Put Down: The assembled samurai have come up with a ritual to draw out this darkness in the province. 5 (and only 5) characters will make an Element of their Choice/ Spellcraft OR Theology roll at TN 25. There must be one check made for each element. Shugenja get a free raise on their rolls.

Results: Event Failure on Steps 1 or 2: An important npc in the not too distant future will be possessed by the Shadow Dragon.

Step 3 results:

0 successful rolls on the ritual: The ritual totally succeeds and everything is fine now! So the participants believe. But in reality, an important npc will be possessed by the Shadow Dragon in the near future.

1-4 successful rolls on the ritual: The ritual succeeds at drawing out the darkness. Unfortunately some of the wards fail and the people at those points are the nearest exit for the darkness. If 1 roll failed, the failed roller gains 4 ranks of Shadow Corruption. If 2 rolls failed, the failed rollers gain 2 ranks of Shadow Corruption each. If 3 or 4 rolls failed, the failed rollers gain 1 rank of Shadow corruption each.

5 successful rolls on the ritual: The darkness coalesces into a rather angry Greater Shadowpawn! Begin combat.

If the participants fail to defeat the Shadowspawn...well, they'll be dead and there will be a Greater Shadowspawn loose in the Imperial Winter Court.

If the participants succeed at defeating the Shadowspawn.....it is a victory for the Empire, but one that must not be spoken of officially. They receive honor for Facing a Superior Foe in the name of your family. They earn 2 Honor for their faction each. Jinpachi will recommend an appointment to the emerald magistrates for any character below status 4 that wishes it. He will similarly support such an appointment to an appropriately low status relative or ally of characters of Status 4 or higher.

Haruto had always had sharp eyes and today he noticed something quite unnatural. Shadows that didn't follow their caster? That seemed like nothing good, nothing good at all. His pulse quickened but he retained his composure.

He had a feeling he knew what this threat was but only by whispered rumors and folklore.

Though internally, Shiitake would have loved to help and had tried his best to see what was going on, he couldn't. So he just kept moving along.

Reiko was alert enough to realize something was wrong, and of sturdy enough spirit to not be shaken by it. Understanding what was wrong, though, was a little beyond her experience. She could tell what it was not but not what it was.

Of course Ginhiko spotted the problem. Noticing things was what she did.

And it didn't rattle her unduly.

But she had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on.

Okay, so Ai definitely noticed something was up. And it scared the kami right out of her. She became otherwise useless.

Yoshihime noticed the odd shadows, which was disturbing, but not truly terrifying, given some of the things she'd seen. Then again, if she had any real knowledge of what weird shadows meant, maybe she'd have been more afraid.

Teika had been so intent on looking for . . . something, that he completely failed to spot the weirdness with the shadows.

Unfortunately, while a few brave samurai gathered having noticed some sort of problems with the shadows, none of them had enough knowledge to actually come up with a workable plan. A few hours of fruitless discussion later, everything returned to normal. So maybe this just an unusual occurance that sorted itself out?

Major NPC in the future will become possessed by the Shadow Dragon.
