[D12, EA: The hallway] 1st Annual Tabi Skating Competition

As the dojo is some distance from the nearest settlement, students are boarded on site. Two large rooms have been set up as barracks - one for men, the other for women - where all but the dojo's staff and the most prestigious of visitors are housed.

[D12, EA: The hallway] 1st Annual Tabi Skating Competition

Post by Bayushi Airi »

Airi had put up a small stand and with a proper enough piece of a scroll to write the rules on. She knew things were much more dire than simply for this bit of silly fun, but that didn't matter.

Tobi, Akihime, and herself had all worked on this together. They'd made plans, gotten permission, and had the drive to make such an event in the first place. There was no way it wasn't going to happen!

The hallway was cleared of servants and they were instructed to go around the long way to bring lunches and early dinners, tea or whatever else other samurai required elsewhere.

Small markers were hung from the walls, showing distance so competitors could know how far they'd slid. There was perhaps, a bit of a greater distance than anyone could possibly go, but Airi wanted to make sure!

When people arrived and were ready to start, she gave a short explanation involving the rules.

"Disputes are settled by our honorable judge, I will also be competing so watch out if you think you've got this all wrapped up!" she warned with a wink.

Everyone can compete, Akihime is the official judge in case of ties or her deciding to Otomo for Otomo's sake.

--OOC---
Mechanics: Athletics/Agility TN 5. Rolls equal distance. Successful raises add 3 to your roll that aren't distance but represent style. In the case of rolls within 5 of each other, refer to raises called, higher called raises is victory. if raises are equal, it's up to the judge who is scored higher, because this is rokugan and bias is more important than fact.

highest roll of 3 is scored. players should do all their rolls at once and post how they performed.

Special: Rolls under TN with raises as usual are failure, rolls over 25 are also a failure, as the character goes too fast and runs into a wall, servant, fellow competitor or some other obstacle. Going too fast is actually bad and can cause problems. Competitors aren't allowed to pick low dice.

The field is the widest hallway leading out of the student's quarters, with a marked distance of about 10 meters. There's room to move, and fall down. Please do not destroy the shoji, sensei will get mad.

Unsurprisingly, no one had ever invited Akodo Yo to go tabi skating. Could you blame them? Who wants to invite a high honor Lion to something that was borderline rule-breaking. Children might get away with many things, but they were still had all the expectations of not causing problems.

Still, as Akodo Yo wandered around looking for things that he could help with, being too young to fight, he couldn't help and stop and watch the Scorpion. Putting on her cheeriest face, trying to savor one last little bit of childhood before the cruel world tore the very walls down about them all. It was sad, and poetic. And worth protecting.

And so he took a turn at it......and he was pretty good at it. He was going.....very fast, but with some of the same grace he'd shown in the various displays of martial prowess at the dojo. He went flying by the markers set up by the Scorpion. 17th marker....19th marker....the wall was fast approaching, but at the 21st marker, he stopped with a spin and a bow to his distant rival.

Agi/Athletics Raise Called, 21 vs. 10, Pass with style.

Watching for a bit, Kat decided to give it a try. He was no athlete, but he'd always thought he had a fairly good sense of balance and poise, as far as such things went. His first try was fine, a push down the hallway that went smoothly enough. His second attempt was shorter, testing just how slick things were.

Having a feel for it, the long haired boy gave a firmer push off, twirling down the hallway and drawing his arms close so he spun faster before stopping on one foot in front of Otomo Akihime. He gave a bow before drawing a flower from his robes, handing it to her before skating off.

Kazu hadn't seen Airi much in the last few days - which, considering all that had happened, might not be particularly surprising. He was quite happy and relieved to see both her, Akihime and Yo safe as he walked back to the Students' Quarters after training. He felt a crease in his brow he hadn't even noticed was there disappear and a slight smile crept into his lips as he saw what Airi and Akihime were up to...

He had heard some things about this Tabi skating thing, although he hadn't seen it done before. It sounded really fun, though! And, seeing Yo's performance, it looked just as fun!

He hadn't had any chances to go outside the Dojo - and with the latest events, they definitely wouldn't now. He hadn't had many chances to run around obstacle courses, climb, or other more athletic physical activities either, as these weren't a large part of their training here. So... he actually missed doing something like this. The chance to do something to liven up their spirits on such a dark day... strange as it might sound, it felt right.

It might be a bit surprising for some to see the Tamori calm face suddenly burst into one of happy excitement and see him jump in to the chance, getting his sandals out and cheerily going to Airi and Akihime to register for a go at the competition.

His first attempt was - frustrating might be one way to put it. Outright ridiculous might be another. He tried to balance on one foot, then jump as he started sliding - and fell squarely on his behind only a few feet after where he had started. Instead of getting dispirited, however, he laughed as he scrambled back to his feet, then made his way back to the start of the field.

Eh... at least it can probably only improve from here, he thought, then started running for his next try. He was apparently bent on doing the exact same manoeuvre instead of learning from his mistake... but this time, he actually managed to pull it off! After the running start, he slid on one foot for some feet, then jumped up with a swirl, landing on his other foot. After a few more feet he sprang again with another spin, this time coming down with the same foot. His balance shifted a bit as he landed, but he managed to keep up well and finish his run successfully. He hadn't got quite as far as Katsumi had, but hey! They had managed some stylish tricks, both of them!

Well, he still another attempt, right? Now he had got the hang of that trick... he attempted it a third time. This time his initial run was much faster, and so was his speed as he started. He managed both spinning jumps well, landing with even better balance... but was still going too fast when he went past the final marker, and ended up hitting the wall.

Kazu chuckled as he scrambled to his feet and took his hands to his knees to recover his breath and his calm. He slowly managed to calm down a bit... but he couldn't help grinning, even laughing a bit again. That had been a wild run - this was fun!!

Despite never having tried this before, Kai threw all his effort into mastering “tabi skating”!

On his first attempt, the young Dragon tried to take big strides to build up speed - only to let out a surprised “AWK!” when his socked feet slipped and flew out from under him, dumping him to the polished floor.

On his second attempt, Kai took more care where he placed his feet. Once he had picked up enough speed, he got greatly daring and attempted a flip - landing perfectly at the "16" marker, on two feet with his arms outstretched in a heroic pose. “Yatta!” he exclaimed proudly.

With that, he just had to make a third attempt - again attempting a flip. Unfortunately, his ambition exceeded his ability, and this time Kai was only able to tumble about three quarters of a full rotation. The young Dragon slammed to the ground, butt first, hard.

“Oof,” Kai said as he stood up and grinned ruefully. “That’s it for me, I think.”

Kentar heard of the tabi skating and was pretty excited. His enthusiasm and power betrayed him as his first run he went entirely too fast and barreled into a support beam that creaked heavily but luckily didn't break.

The large boy shook it off and made two much more reserved runs adding a little flair to his decent distance.

Of course, as she had stated, Airi would be competing as well. She was a veteran! Clearly the favorite! With a dash and a hop, she twirled and sailed on her tabi past several markers. Well done, but not good enough, of course!

Going to retake position, she ran to the starting marker and slid on a single foot, keeping perfectly balanced and making the most distance she had to date. Beating a personal best! Yes, today was certainly looking up finally after everything that had happened.

But she had a third attempt, though for once decided not to push it too hard. She saw Kazu-kun wipe out, after all. :?

Not that she'd accept a win if she got it, she would have to push that burden onto a newcomer.

Tobi was in a world of his own. Nothing new there then. Events of yesterday forgotten . . . or at least confined to the part of Tobi that existed elsewhere. Despite actually being very new to this tabi skating after having been introduced to it by Airi, he proved that Crane always approach everything with art and grace and absolutely failed to fall flat on his face or hit anything. He didn't exactly get the best distance though.

Akihime manages a giggle at the tabi skaters and, including a look at Katsumi when he hands off that flower of this. Silly Scorpion, you can't fix the contest that way, Imperials are meant to be bastions of honors.

"Minna-san!" The Otomo announces, after looking through a small notepad, "Best flourish: Shosuro Katsumi; Embodiment of the Game's Spirit: Otomo Yuuma, Hardest Head: Hida Kentaro!"

There's a pause as she politely coughs, "As for those who placed: Third Place - Tamori Kazunosuke, Second Place - Mirumoto Kai, First Place..."

Tapping on the notepad produces a drumroll.
